Preparing for a Rose Garden

Preparing for a Rose Garden

One of the easiest ways to ensure that your rose garden is a success is to be prepared. You can do this by making sure you've followed these tips for rose gardening soil preparation.

People need healthy food to perform their best, and roses are no different. In fact, roses are plants that require a large amount of nutrients in the soil in order to grow large and colorful blooms. The most important thing you can do for you roses is to feed them right. Since roses gain their nourishment through the soil that they are planted in, this means that you should take extra care to make sure that the soil is prepared sufficiently to support healthy growth. Here are some tips for proper rose gardening soil preparation.

The first step you need to take before planting is to dig up all the ground in your bed. You don't want any hard soil left. By digging up the ground, you will have the ability to get the fertilizer well mixed into the soil and this will allow the nutrients to sink into all of the dirt. This means that no matter what direction the roots grow in, they will be able to reach food. You want to make sure that the entire layer of nutrients reaches at least two to three feet. As your rose plant grows, its roots will reach deeper and deeper and this will make certain they are fed.

Your next step is to dig a one foot deep hole and lay the soil to the side. You can place it in your wheelbarrow or on a piece of plastic so that it can be re-added later. After digging the hole in the garden bed, the next step in rose gardening soil preparation is adding fertilizer. This can be in the form of compost, peat moss, or manure. You may want to consult a local greenery expert for advice on which fertilizers are available and useful in your area. Since climate can affect them, your fertilizer should be the one most potent in your area. Add around three inches of fertilizer directly into the hole you have dug in the bed. Start digging for another foot, mixing the fertilizer with the soil. This is the hole where you will place your rose plant, so you will want to make certain that the fertilizer and soil are mixed extremely well. After it has been mixed very thoroughly, it's time to add the dirt from the hole back into the rose bed. Once the dirt has been replaced, add another three inches of the fertilizer over the top of the rose bed. To protect your roots and encourage their growth, also add some bone meal. There are also rose fertilizers especially designed for the soil of a rose bed, you may want add some now if you want. But the soil should be well prepared without it. After all these layers have been added, use a spade to mix them up a little more and rake the top of the roe bed smooth.

The next step of rose gardening soil preparation is the hardest one: waiting. You need to give the soil a few weeks to absorb all of the nutrients before planting your rose plant. This will ensure that your rose plant is being fed the minute it gets planted.

If you follow our rose gardening soil preparation tips, your garden will be ready for planting. And you rose garden is well on its way to success.

How To Grow The Perfect Rose Garden

How To Grow The Perfect Rose Garden

Roses have gotten a bad wrap over the years for being difficult to grow and maintain.  If you are thinking of rose gardening don't let this rumor stop you.  While rose gardening can prove to be challenging, once you get the hang of it, it really isn't that bad.

When you first start rose gardening, you will have to choose what type of rose you wish to plant, and no, I'm not talking about the color.  You will have to choose between bare-root, pre-packaged, and container-grown roses.  Bare-root roses are sold in the winter and early spring.  They should be planted as soon as frosts are over and the ground is warm and workable.  Pre-packaged roses are bare-root plants that are sold in a bad or box with something around the roots to retain moisture, such as sawdust.  Container-grown roses are grown; you guessed it, in containers.  They will be either budding or already in bloom when they become available in the early spring.

Planting in rose gardening is not that much different than any other type of plant.  The most important thing, as always, is good, healthy soil and a prime planting area.  It doesn't matter whether your roses are bare-root or container-grown, the planting methods are the same as any other shrub.  Make sure the spot you choose has good drainage, gets plenty of sunlight, and will not overcrowd your roses.  Before planting, any dead leaves and thin or decayed shoots need to be cut off.  Any damaged or very long roots also need to be trimmed.  Soak bare-root roses in water about 10-12 hours to restore moisture in the roots before planting and water the soil before planting as well.  Make sure the hole you have dug is large enough for the root growth of the rose.  Also it is a good idea to use compost or mulch.  After all, roses like extra nutrients just like any other plant.

Roses need the same things as other plants; they are just a bit needier.  One of the most important things to remember in rose gardening is that roses are heavy feeders and will need several fertilizer applications.  Fertilizing should be started in early spring and discontinued in early fall.  Make sure not to over-fertilize (fertilize should come with instructions) and water after each feeding.  Roses require large amounts of water; a thorough watering twice a week should be enough.

Pruning is an essential part to flower gardening.  It increases blooms and encourages healthy plant growth.  Different varieties of roses have different instructions for pruning, so you might want to read up on your rose types and see what is suggested.

The main thing to remember in rose gardening is to water, water, and water some more.  One other thing about rose gardening is the amount of fertilizer and nutrients you will need to use, and the pruning that needs to be done to keep your roses under control and healthy.  Even though rose gardening takes a little more time and roses are more work, they are one of the most unique and beautiful plants, and definitely worth the extra work.

Rose Garden Design to Increase the Value and Beauty of the Property

Rose Garden Design to Increase the Value and Beauty of the Property

Learning how to design a garden can be tricky and frustrating. Garden designers take a lot of dedication and attention to design a garden. They design our garden based on clients taste and budget. They design our garden elegant or as simple as we want. Choosing the right plants and location, play an important role in garden design. Garden designers employ a great creativity when they design a garden. With more and more UK residents staying put in the same property for longer – on average, a family lives in one house for over 20 years now – the emphasis on maintaining and doing up a property has changed from saleability to liveability. And top of the list are landscape Garden designs.

A landscape design will not add value to our home. On the contrary it is likely to add quite a lot of value to our home. People are finding that their new liveability upgrades are actually putting a few thousands on the resale value of a house anyway- because any upgrade means that all the stuffs laid in are much newer and therefore more likely to last for a long time. Garden designing also adds a uniqueness and beauty to the outside parts of the home that may otherwise not have been apparent. And uniqueness, it is becoming clear, does make people interested in a house. The primary function of garden design, though, is to make our own outside area or space look and feel personal to us.

The idea of making the home more unique and original is by a proper garden in the space available for it. Besides outlook and climate there is also the choice of color, type and size as well as the addition of companion planting. Roses are a unique flower, and a rose garden design can be turned into something truly stunning. There are a number of reasons why rose gardens are preferred over other flowers, including the sheer number of different types and colors of rose.

Steps to design a rose garden:

- Choosing the color of rose for the garden

- Choosing different types of roses because all rose are not equally made.

There are different types of roses available to grow and plant in our garden. Breeding roses will together produce an even wider spectrum of colors, allowing us to plant a virtual rainbow worth of roses in our garden design. The choices of planting the roses depend on our taste and it varies according to our needs. After planning our garden the next step is to visualize the plan or either draws a rough sketch of it. If you were not able to visualize or draw it's better to work on software.

Roses are truly beautiful flowers. They are so complicated and delicate and will definitely give notice to your rose garden. But which color theme do you go with this year? Red, yellow or pink? How about white? Hmmmm...Something to think about. You dont want to rush into things here. You want your garden to be something special and show everybody that you spent a lot of time and hard work on it.

First plan, plan, plan!

Then when you found your theme, as you are buying the roses for your garden, think about these tips...

First choose the right potting soil for your rose garden. Your rose garden should have at least 1.5 feet of fresh and fertile potting soil. Make sure your soil is very ventilated and drains easily. Where you put your flowerbed is also important. Your rose garden should get anywhere from 4 to 6 hours of sunlight every day.

Mulching is good for roses. It keeps the rain water from caking up the top soil and also controls a weed problem. Since roses need water once a week, the mulching will help with any rain that may come in between watering sessions. Roses will need one inch of water per week and you should water them once every week in one session, opposed to watering them throughout the week.

Different kinds of roses have different meanings to people. Here are a few for you to consider when building your rose garden...

Two entertwines roses means that a wedding or an engagement is in the future of some lucky couple. A single red rose means I love you. Two dozen roses means congradulations. For dozen roses means unconditional love. A single rose, regardless of color, means thank you. One dozen roses is meant for graditude. Yellow and white roses means harmony. Red and white roses means bonding. Red and yellow roses means happy celebration. Yellow roses are for friendship. White roses means I miss you. Pink roses means thank you.

Roses require light pruning. To prune your roses, you will need to remove any old stems and leaves. This will enable the sap to reach any new stems and leaves that will need it.

When buying roses, they will come in to formats. Either packaged or plain rooted. You should buy the plain rooted ones right before you plan to plant them, because they cannot last long outside of soil. The best time to plant roses is after winter, after the ground is thawed-Right after winter for southern states or somewhere during spring in the northern states.

So when you are planning your rose garden, remember these simple tips and have fun building your garden!

Transplanting for your Container Garden

The best time to transplant your plants is in the early spring. Transplanting is traumatic for your plants so it is best to do it before they wake up from their winter slumber. You can continue to transplant during the spring, until the leaves begin to show. If the leaves are showing, then you should wait until fall before you start the transplanting process.

The Addictions of Rose Gardening

Edit Article |

]]>

For many of us, the act of gardening brings us closer to nature by getting us outdoors and allowing us the opportunity to tend and grow objects that in the absence of our assistance would not be able to survive, let alone thrive. There is a special connection between the growers of roses and their plants, however, which seems to go even beyond the basic instincts of the traditional gardener.

The first reason that roses can be such an addictive plant is the roots it has in our culture in the form of myth and symbolism. The same reason we are addicted to rose gardening is the same reason we are willing to pay a ridiculous amount for a single flower or bunch on Valentine's Day- nothing in our society communicates more than the rose. This cultural phenomenon has been a part of western heritage for longer than anyone can trace. The rose was considered a flower of romance in ancient China, where it was first developed, and was used throughout the Roman Empire. British history is full of roses in every context- the theater where Shakespeare's plays were put on was known as the rose, and some of the most distinguishing events in British history occurred during the long "War of the Roses". Roses were not actually introduced to Europe in the cultivated style until the late 1700s, when they arrived from China.

Perhaps some of the addiction we have in cultivating roses stems in part from the same areas that our ancient forebears found so appealing. Many roses have a very distinctive scent, and the shape of the rose is certainly unique enough in itself to warrant extensive cultivation and appeal. Roses can also be found in many different colors and varieties, and there is symbolism attached to every colour that roses can be found in- red, of course, symbolizes love, but did you know that pink roses carry a message of gratitude, while yellow represent joy?

Roses also represent a singular species which can manifest itself in a variety of styles, and therefore a rose gardener really needs only to focus on rose types to bring all the variety to the appearance of her lawn and garden that could be wished for. Roses can be planted in the miniature style, as bushes, and as climbers. As has been noted above, roses are also available in several different colors which will add to the overall diversity in appearance of your garden. Roses are also available in petals of many different sizes to further add diversity to your landscaping. Species roses grow hips that are colorful and last well into the winter, and can add a further sprinkle of uniqueness to your landscaping by attracting birds throughout the winter months.

Lastly, roses require as little or as much attention as the gardener wants to put in. Pruned bushes look ideal, but roses are also beautiful when allowed to grow freely. Roses also tend to be very hardy and resistant to diseases. The soil composition needs not have too many considerations, and the ground cover is totally up to the gardener.

Growing roses can be an addicting experience because of their history, their beauty, their variety, and their maintenance. Once a person dedicates their garden space to the cultivation of roses, the possibilities are limitless.

Though synthetic suede gloves are very expensive then the rest, you will find them very comfortable and long lasting. Most of these gloves get extended up to the forearms and provide extra protection from the thorns, then the other gloves.

I was talking to a very experienced rose garden enthusiast the other day, Dr Tom Goodman, who has spent many years digging in the soil to create magnificent rose gardens. He retired from teaching years ago and is now a professional photographer. Ten years ago he decided he needed a beautiful natural background scene to take photos of his photography clients.

Dr Tom decided to plant a very large rose garden with climbing roses for the arches, trellises and fences. A variety of bush roses were planted near the garden benches and walkways. Miniature rose bushes were planted around the fish pond and waterfall. Many of the rose bushes came from cuttings that were trimmed from a beautiful military rose garden in January 1971 when the rose bushes were dormant. The stocks or trimmings were cut to 12 inches and the bottom of the stock was cut at a 45 degree angle.

In the central valley, near Sacramento, California, the weather is mild and the growing season is longer that in the state of Ohio where Dr Tom was raised. The bushes are pruned in late December and early January. The soil is prepared with the right mixture of soil and natural organic fertilizer.

The rose cuttings then are planted in the ground or in containers: half wine barrels or 5 gallon buckets. An alternative is to place the cuttings in a clear container with approximately 3 inches of water in the bottom. That way you can see the roots sprouting from the 45 degree angle bottom of the cutting.

Rose bushes can be purchased and are usually grafted bushes and these suffice for a quick start garden.

In California the rainy season is December through February and rose bushes like an abundance of water. In mid February the weather starts warming up and the temperature climbs into the 60's. At this time you will notice the new planted cuttings will show signs of sprouting along with the climbing rose, rose trees, rose bushes, and the miniature rose bushes.

The rose garden starts coming to life. The buds start showing in a few weeks as the temperature rises. The rose bushes love sunshine and hot weather. They become very excited in April and May when the roses start blossoming with beautiful colors (red, white, purple, yellow, orange, peach, and other multiple-color). The scene depicts a cascading waterfall of vibrant colors with the different layers of roses.

It is very exciting and satisfying to watch the rose garden maturing and take form. The steps you take to success are:

• Choosing the right type and colors of rose bush for your garden.

• Planting the right type of bush for your geographical location.

• Fertilizing your rose bushes with the right products.

• Watering and abundant sunshine to get the best results.

• Pruning the bush the proper way.

• Disease control - organic or inorganic.

• And use some very loving care.

It may sound like a lot of work but it is spread out and is easy to control.

Thousands of people have been photographed in the rose garden to include: engagement couples, brides, high school seniors, babies, animals, families, cheerleaders, sports players, race cars, firemen and many other groups.

Dr Tom is creating many articles on how to create and maintain a successful and beautiful rose garden and the articles will be published soon.

Dr Tom can take a novice rose gardener and make them an expert rose gardener in a short period of time using his rose garden information. Anyone can create a beautiful rose garden, and it does take some time and patience, but it can be extremely rewarding as a hobby for a long time. Some of the roses bushes in this article are more than 40 years old and still produce fine roses. Anyone, Including you can do it too.

Dr Tom has a wealth of free information for you just visit his rose garden information site. His next article will be on planning, developing, creating and maintaining a rose garden.

The texture and the fullness of the rose is unlike any other flower, and they come in a wide variety of scents and colors that range from a very bright yellow to a dark deep red.  It is curious that such a beautiful flower is also equipped with such a thorny stem.  A little of the good and the bad from nature I suppose. Roses originally came from the northern hemisphere, and there are over a hundred species growing in mostly temperate regions.  Although the rose as been the flower of choice to express ones love for many years now, it was used originally for medicinal purposes in medieval times.

Rose gardens are not only one of the most beautiful types of flower gardens to have, they are without a doubt the most difficult to grow and maintain.  This doesn't mean one should not give it a try, it just means you should research the subject so you are well prepared.  One of the biggest challenges you will run into when doing research on rose garden material is finding the time to continue searching. Many of the articles that you uncover on this subject will be useful, but there will be some that won't be. It is necessary that you find the best resources available on this subject.

Whether to plant red roses, yellow roses, rose vines, rose bushes, or climbing roses are just a few of the choices you will need to make when planning your  rose garden.  There are many types of roses to plant in your garden so take your time when considering what kind of flowers you want blooming in your garden.

If it is hard for you to visualize your finished rose garden design by just looking at your layout, there is some very good garden landscape design software available. Much of the garden landscape design software was originally developed for professional landscapers, but since has been modified for the beginner who wants to do-it-themselves. There are many do-it-yourself landscape design software programs available today. Landscape design software lets you see a virtual picture of the rose garden design and enables you to move items around and see the changes you make come to life. Most landscape design software programs offer advice on using and placing the many different types of roses available today in your design. A well designed rose garden will always change with time, and some of the landscape design software available will allow you to view your rose garden as it matures. You can see what it will look like 5 or 10 years from now when the rose bushes and plants have grown and matured.

The leading search engine for finding rose garden related info is Google.   Finding rose garden material on the net isn't arduous; it just takes a little bit of diligence. While one might believe that the greatest means to use for researching thorough info on this topic is the internet, it is vital not to leave out other sources. Keep in mind; you're not going to find every tidbit of rose garden information educational.  To stay current with the newest info, you should think about signing up for an RSS feed on the topic of rose gardens

One of the most famous rose gardens is the White House Rose Garden, and is located in the west wing of the White House.  Many Presidential ceremonies and news conferences have taken place here, as well as the wedding of Richard Nixon's daughter Tricia, to Edward Cox in 1971.  First Lady Ellen Louise Wilson the wife of President Woodrow Wilson established the garden in 1913 when she redesigned what was previously known as the colonial gardens.

There are woodland walks, a coastal path, grassland areas and one or two large ponds with all the associated wildlife. Each area has it's own natural beauty and the

Preventing Weeds from Overtaking Your Yard

If bees are public enemy #1 for most farmers, lawn owners and gardeners tend to view weeds with very much the same perception. Weeds are non-native plants that are unwanted in a certain place and time and can be very much harmful to your plants and even public amenity.

Using Pond Pumps in Your Water Garden

The sounds of the water from your garden feature and the effect it can have on you is an experience not to be missed. Pump up the volume with the sound of splashing water. For instance listen to the sound of running bath water and to the constant dripping of a tap - which can be annoying to say the least.

Organically Improving Your Soil with Vermiculture

Maybe you've never heard the term vermiculture, if so don't feel bad, many experienced gardeners are unfamiliar with this organic practice. I think vermiculture is fascinating; simply put it's the process of composting kitchen waste with earthworms. We're not talking about common night crawlers, but

How Much Variety is Too Much in Your Garden?

Have you ever walked by someone's front garden and thought - what were they thinking? The mixture and variety of plants seems to make no sense and are placed haphazardly all over the place. Although you most definitely need to choose a variety of plant types and colors for your own garden layout, how do

Rose Garden Designs Using Cast Stone Wall Fountains

Rose gardens and rose garden designs are typically quite stunning on their own, but if you are looking for a spectacular way to make them even more dramatic and stunning, you should consider adding cast stone wall fountains to the mix. Cast stone wall fountains are quite beautiful, and can really add a lot of beauty to any garden, especially rose gardens which are already stunning all on their own. Because rose gardens are typically filled with so much color, the contrast added by the cast stone wall fountains can really be an aesthetic improvement.

Rose Garden Designs using Cast Stone Wall Fountains

If you are looking for the right rose garden design and you already know what type of outdoor wall fountains you will be using, then you can essentially base the design of your rose garden on the hardscape elements. It would be stunning, for example, for you to let your roses climb the walls on either side of your outdoor wall fountains, to add some drama to the stone or brick walls that your fountains adorn. Can you imagine the dramatic appearance of brightly colored roses climbing over stark outdoor wall fountains? It really would be a stunning sight, and visitors to your rose garden would be absolutely thrilled to see it. Find out more about ways to incorporate wall fountains with your outdoor decor at http://www.ckclandscapinginc.com.

If on the other hand, you have already begun to grow your rose garden and are looking for ways to add cast stone wall fountains to the décor, you may have a little more difficulty because you will have to find fountains that not only fit in with the colors of your rose garden, but you will also have to find wall fountains that work well with the space that you already have. While many people begin with cast stone fountains and add other elements like rose bushes later, some people choose their flowers long before hard-scaping elements like cast stone wall fountains, rocks, fences and walls are ever even added.

Many garden designers place trellises, gazebos or arbors that border their rose garden or even place in the center of the rose garden. By using such a design it makes it much easier to find a place to hang outdoor wall fountains in the absence of brick walls or other type of walls and borders that typically border rose gardens. Cast Stone Wall Fountains and Colors

Rose gardens, by nature, are truly stunning, simply because they involve so much bright color. The people who create rose gardens generally tend to work very hard at cultivating them, growing the perfect roses, pruning the bushes perfectly. Anyone who puts this much energy into a rose garden will understand how absolutely imperative it is to find garden elements that work perfectly in the décor and design of the garden. You do not want your cast stone wall fountains to contrast your rose gardens in the wrong way. You want all of the colors, all of the textures, shapes and design elements to fit together in the perfect way; otherwise you are simply wasting your time and money, exploring design options that might never work.

Finding not only the perfect cast stone wall fountains, but also the perfect rose garden designs is really up to you ultimately, because gardening is all about tending to something that you enjoy and are passionate about, rather than simply accepting the advice of a stranger. As long as you understand that choosing outdoor wall fountains has a lot to do with making them blend in with your garden, you will do just fine when it comes to designing your beautiful rose garden around your cast stone water features, and your beautiful outdoor wall fountains around your stunning rose garden designs.
